Please Join Me In Welcoming MK Konefal To The BSC As Its Next Cooperative Experience Manager!
WRITTEN BY SHAWN THOMAS (Human Resources Manager)
MK (they/them) will be joining us on Wednesday, March 1st. They are a seasoned community organizer, who co-founded Anakbayan Santa Cruz and GABRIELA Santa Cruz, two transnational, anti-imperialist Filipino organizations, in 2018 and 2021 respectively. They are an alum of UC Santa Cruz with a degree in environmental studies and an emphasis on agroecology and indigenous resistance. They also have strong ties with the UC Santa Cruz Critical Race and Ethnic Studies (CRES) Dept., where they helped re-establish a Filipino-American, student-led class within the department. In 2022, they taught as a Teaching Assistant under the CRES Dept. and were a booking coordinator for Papalodown Agency, a Filipina-owned PR agency. They are excited to be joining the BSC to provide housing and safe spaces for students of marginalized identities. In their free time, Mk likes to go out in nature with their service dog and spend quality time with their family and other spoonie QTPOC siblings.
Be Sponsored by the BSC on a Solidarity Delegation to the CaribBean Coast of Nicaragua from June 17-23!
WRITTEN BY TOMI CHUNG (BSC President)
Dear Community,
Over the weekend, on February 19, Nicaragua celebrated National Cooperativism Day in honor of the foundation of Nicaragua's first cooperatives by General Augusto César Sandino and Wiwilí in 1934. In celebration of the BSC's newfound commitment towards building the Solidarity Economy movement and long intertwined histories of global cooperation, the Member Education Coordinator and President are excited to announce that the BSC will be sponsoring two co-opers to attend a solidarity delegation with Friends of Asociación de Trabajadores del Campo (ATC).
Friends of ATC is an organization dedicated to supporting campesina movements in Nicaragua and will be hosting an in-person delegation from June 17 - 23, 2023. Just a little information about the delegation, pulled from their website:
This delegation will begin in the nation’s capital, Managua, in the Pacific Coast region of the country, and travel eastward by land on one of Nicaragua’s new highways that extends all the way to Bluefields on the Caribbean Sea. Along the way, the group first visit the Latin American Institute of Agroecology, a training center for students from throughout Mesoamerica and the Caribbean, led by the historic farmworker organization Asociación de Trabajadores del Campo and international peasant movement La Via Campesina. Upon entering the Southern Caribbean Coast Autonomous region, the delegation will visit with different afrodescendant and indigenous communities that are important groups in the Caribbean Coast autonomy process and Nicaraguan culture.
We are now circulating an application for two individuals to be sponsored by the BSC for attendance at the delegation. Sponsorship means that the BSC will cover registration fees of the trip (and potentially other expenses) for the couple who are selected. The Google Form application below is due approximately two weeks from now, on Friday, March 3, 2023 @ 11:59PM Pacific so please review, apply, and spread as soon as possible if you are interested or know someone else who is.
