What do the RJP do?

Who are we?

The Berkeley Student Cooperative (BSC) Restorative Justice Practitioners (RJP) provide community-based, voluntary mediation and education for addressing conflict and harm. Our work draws from restorative justice principles that decenter punitive discipline and centers shared responsibility and reconciliation. RJ processes do not replace Conduct when formal reporting is required, but they can be used as an alternative or complement when appropriate.

What is mediation?

Mediation is a facilitated conversation between people in conflict, supported by trained, neutral practitioners. The goal is to help participants clarify concerns, understand impacts, and reach mutually agreed-upon outcomes. Mediation is confidential, voluntary, and collaborative.

What is Restorative Justice (RJ)?

Restorative Justice is a voluntary, opt-in framework for responding to harm that focuses on:

  • Community as interdependent, relational, constructive, and wise
  • Restoring respect, dignity, and care to everyone through confidential guided self-reflection, accountability-taking, and exploration of the roots of harm
  • Supporting an ongoing journey of transformation at the personal, collective, cultural, and structural levels
