Habitability Awards

WRITTEN BY TAVI OEHMKE (Habitability Coordinator)

OVERALL:

Even though we are celebrating four houses in particular, all houses across the BSC did much better on their inspections when we compare the first round of Spring 2025 hab inspections to the Fall 2025 hab inspections–the average grade across the houses went from a C to a C+. We thank and congratulate all the members–especially the hab coords–who helped this happen, and recognize that there is still work to be done.

MOST IMPROVED

Cloyne (large, >45)

Cloyne Court, through the initiative and enthusiasm of its members, completely cleared their hallways and an enormous dump run pile, did an extraordinary amount of work on their courtyard garden, and improved their bathrooms and common spaces between summer and fall of 2025. When their results required re-inspections this semester, they rose to the challenge and addressed every noted concern.

Kidd (small, <45)

Kidd, despite doing well on both the summer and fall hab inspections in 2025, still managed to improve. Changes included cleaning up their hallways and improvement in their food storage methods. Their interior common spaces were even better maintained, with clear walkways, a fantastic kitchen, and a clean, well-organized free pile.

BEST OVERALL

Hoyt (large)

Hoyt’s common areas were beautifully organized and clear of any major issues. Hoyt’s pantry was well-organized, all food was properly sealed, and the walls featured informative signs about the impacts that improper food storage can have on the habitability of a house over time. Members have taken a proactive approach to garden care and beautification.

Wolf (small)

Wolf boasts one of only two documented A grades since 2024, standing out as a particular exception for Fall 2025 inspections. Their living room was clean and organized, their study room was neat and tidy, and their patio/garden areas looked great. There was not a single fire safety issue, which is quite uncommon and very impressive.

It’s BSC Scholarship Registration Time! Register TODAY!

WRITTEN BY DAVID APPELBAUM (Development Director)

It’s that time again! Register now for your Fall/Spring Coop Scholarship.

The last day to register is June 26th - so don’t put it off. It’s closer than you think!

As a reminder, scholarships are based on need so it’s critical you fill out the application fully and set access to your Cal-Net account to the Development Director: dd@bsc.coop.

Amounts are either 1/3 or 2/3’s of one term’s rent divided by two. One half for Fall and one half for Spring. It is NOT a straight 1/3 or 2/3’s of your rent per term just so there’s no confusion.

You will also be eligible for additional scholarship funds from our pool of 10 endowed scholarships. These are funds donated by former members as part of their estate plan and are distributed based on both need and specific criteria such as GPA, area of study, place of birth, and other criteria they felt strongly about. Members are selected by the Estate executors and/or grant administrators.

Thank you and sign up now! BSC Scholarship Application for Fall 2026 - Spring 2027 Academic Year [Google Form]
