The Health Worker Coordinator (HWC) is responsible for managing the BSC Health Worker Program by training, supervising, and supporting health workers. The HWC is charged with ensuring that Health Workers continue to promote health in the BSC through core health promotion strategies: community-level engagement/education, peer support, and appropriate referral. The HWC is also a student liaison between the BSC and University Health Services Health Worker Program, University Health Services, and other health promotion organizations.

Job Duties

1. With assistance from the Member Resources Supervisor, develop a plan for how the HWs, HEC, and HWC should respond to a variety of health concerns, including medical emergencies.

2. Works with the Emergency Services Coordinator to hold First Aid and CPR training for all HWs by week 4.

3. Maintains stock of safer sex and first aid supplies and distributes supplies to HWs and/or units.

4. With assistance from the Health Education Coordinator (HEC), plan and implement HW training by week 4.

5. Training topics should include but are not limited to: BSC policies, practices, and resources regarding health and safety; substance abuse prevention and intervention; appropriate medical emergency response; communicable diseases; and appropriate referrals to the Tang Center and other health organizations.

6. Meet with each unit’s Health Worker and House Manager at the beginning of each semester (but after the Health Worker training) to discuss the specific needs of that unit and set goals for the semester. Organizes biweekly meetings for HWs, which may include bringing in the HEC, outside professionals, and speakers to provide specialized education, as appropriate.

7. Ensure that the HWs are fulfilling the duties of the Health Worker job description and provide feedback to unit House Managers and House Presidents.

8. Be on-call to assist HWs in responding to resident health concerns by providing appropriate referrals and identifying BSC and community resources.

9. Ensures institutional memory by archiving training outlines, workshop templates, health tips, and other resources on the health worker google site, and by maintaining the site.

10. Provide health tips, health supplies, and on-call support to units without their own Health Worker.

11. Maintain records of the frequency and types of health-related consultations and analyze ongoing health and response needs.

Skills/Knowledge Required for Job Performance

1. Must demonstrate strong multitasking and organizational skills.

2. Must demonstrate strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

3. Must be able to work independently.

4. Must be committed to public health and harm reduction.

5. Ability to receive and offer feedback constructively.

6. Some teaching experience (deCal facilitation, for example) is strongly preferred, but not required.

7. Familiarity with the Health Worker Program and University Health Services is strongly preferred, but not required.

9. Willing to seek additional training independently.

Entry Level Experience/Education Required

Must be a BSC member for the term of job.

Additional Requirements

1. Respond to calls and emails within 24 hours during the business week.

2. Meet bi-weekly with the Member Resources Supervisor.

3. Attend Member Resource Department meetings, to meet three times a semester.

4. Attend UHS Health Worker Coordinator meetings at least once a month.

5. Confer as needed with the Health Education Coordinator to discuss and set common goals for the semester.

6. Keep a project log, including the hours spent on each project, to be submitted to the Member Resources Supervisor.

7. Keep records of relevant information and work done and prepare best practices and exit documents for the next HEC.


Term of Job: One semester (may be extended based on performance). Fall and Spring only
