CalFresh on Campus: Breaking the Stigma of Food Insecurity

The Berkeley Food Institute at UC Berkeley released a new episode from their Just Food podcast series titled, "CalFresh on Campus: Breaking the Stigma of Food Insecurity."

CalFresh is a food assistance program in which individuals can receive up to $192 a month for groceries, yet many people who are eligible do not know about the program or choose not to apply. The issue of low participation extends to college campuses, where food insecurity levels are disproportionately high. This episode explores recent measures taken by the California government and UC Berkeley to make it easier for students to enroll in CalFresh.

Learn more about food security resources available to UC Berkeley students on the Basic Needs Security website, or check out the Alameda Community Food Bank website.

Calling all students: UC wants your input on sexual violence and prevention

The University of California is inviting students to apply for a seat on the inaugural student advisory board tasked with providing input on UC sexual harassment and sexual violence issues.

Members will serve as liaisons to students on their campuses and help advise the university’s systemwide Title IX office on its ongoing prevention and response efforts. They will also assist in identifying emerging issues related to sexual harassment and sexual violence and contribute to the policy review process.

“This board will play a crucial role by providing a much-needed student perspective,” said Systemwide Title IX Officer Kathleen Salvaty. “I look forward to hearing students’ concerns and ideas, and leveraging their input so we can further improve university policies.”

Interested students may apply online by Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017 at 5 p.m. (PST).
