Because there is no landlord making a profit, the co-ops are the best deal in town. Budgets are collectively set by the BSC Board of Directors every spring and cost substantially less than private housing or residence halls.

Rates for the 17 Room and Board Houses

The cost for the 17 room and board houses for Fall 2015/Spring 2016 is $3,384, which is about $850 per month. There is a free month between semesters for Winter Break.  The cost is the same regardless of room size.

At Hillegass/Parker standard singles cost the same as the other room and board houses, $3,384 per semester.  Hillegass Parker also has larger single rooms which cost $4,002 for the semester.

The price includes much more than just a place to live; the cost includes:

  •     food
  •     utilities
  •     cleaning supplies, toilet paper, etc
  •     furniture
  •     a rich social environment
  •     co-op wide workshops, social and educational events
  •     additional amenities depending on each co-op

Additional amenities range from hot tubs, saunas, newspaper and periodical subscriptions, game rooms, exercise equipment, computers, printers, audio/visual equipment and much more.  Some houses charge a small additional fee for internet and other media.

The Apartments

The apartments don’t come with food service, so they cost less than the houses. You should be aware that it is very unlikely to be assigned to an apartment for your first semester as a BSC member unless you are a participant in UC Berkeley's EOP program.  If you are an EOP student, you still need to apply early to get an apartment; submit your application and waiting list deposit as soon as you know you are interested.  It is common for new members to get apartments for the summer, however. The apartment prices differ depending on how many bedrooms the apartment has, as well as the apartment complex.

New members are not eligible to live in the Northside Apartments in the Fall and Spring semesters.

Garbage is paid by the BSC. The BSC pays for gas and water up to but not in excess of the established budgets. Member pays for electricity used in their apartment.  Member may pay budget overages and/or all other utilities.

The Fall contract period begins on Friday, August 19, 2016  and ends on Friday, December 17, 2016.  The Spring contract period begins on Friday, January 13, 2017 and ends on Friday, May 19, 2017. The first payment for Fall will be due with the return of the contract. The remaining payments for Fall 2016 will be due Wednesday, September 14, 2016 and Wednesday, October 12, 2016. The payments for Spring 2017 are due Wednesday, November 30, 2016 (for current members) and Wednesday, February 8, 2017 and Wednesday, March 8, 2017

Members remaining in the co-op between Fall and Spring do not incur additional charges if they want to stay over Winter Break.

The rates below are per person per semester. We do not send bills and you are responsible for making sure your payment has been received by our office by the due date.
